Type

The type lecture that we had was one of my favourite lectures. It was very interesting hearing about type as this is one of my favourite themes to study. I love typography, I have done for a while and I am highly interested in typography.

Herbert Bayer

Herbert Bayer was an Austrian and American graphic designers, photographer, sculptor, art director, environmental and interior designer. He had a massive background of experience behind him. His education was ‘Bauhaus’ that we wrote and looked at a few weeks ago.

Bayer accomplished many achievements, even early in his career – he was the head of the first typographic workshop in Bauhaus and managed to provoke the typographic world by introducing his revolutionary Universal font – based only on lower case letters (fig1). He is also known as an exhibition designer, educator, art consultant and director for several companies.

One of my favorite pieces that he created was ABC poster that he created. What I like about this piece of work is the layout of the typography. I fell that if the type was level this poster wouldn’t work. Also, he has used a good colour pallet and the use of black and red fit in well together.

James Felici

‘The beauty of type lies in its utility; prettiness without readability serves neither author nor reader.’

Herbert Spencer – Typographica

This work here is from the graphic designer Herbert Spencer. I decided to look at this because I love the way that he has created these. It’s so busy and makes the readers look closer at this work. It grabs your attention, as there is loads of detail on there which makes you interested in it. From looking at this I know that making specific pieces busy/cluttered can work as you can see that this works really well.

Kinetic Typography

Kinetic typography, the technical name for ‘moving text’ is an animation mixing motion and text to express ideas using video animation. I found this very interested. I have always looked at kinetic typography and wondered how it has been done. I would like to look into this further as this is a possible idea for further projects. During the animation tutorials we have had a good understanding on how to use after effects. So I could further my knowledge and start playing around with moving text too see what I can create.

A kinetic typography that I really like is ‘Typography’ by Ronnie Bruce. I like this because he has used moving text well and he has put in a voice over of the text on the screen. You see this a lot in music videos with the lyrics on screen. I would definitely like to try this out too see what I could do.

Saul Bass

‘My initial thoughts about what a title can do was to set mood and the prime underlying core of the film’s story, to express the story in some metaphorical way. I saw the title as a way of conditioning the audience, so that when the film actually began, viewers would already have an emotional resonance with it’

‘The consecration of the movie credit sequence as a design object’

Conceptual Type

‘The idea becomes a machine that makes the art’ – Sol Le Wit

‘To begin with, lets be clear that conceptual type is an oxymoron. A typeface can’t really be conceptual, because it is dependent on its execution. Typeface design is a craft, so the process that transforms the pure idea into a functional font is a critical part of the discipline. Before the typeface is executed, it is not a typeface it is simply an idea. – Peter bil’ak

The quote above from Peter Bil’ak, is a really good quote about conceptual type. I mainly like the last bit about the typeface being an idea. I agree with this. I think that if you have an idea then it is not going to become a typeface until you have actually created it.
