Narratives

Independant Task

Banksy is a England-based graffiti artist, political activist and film director of unverified identify. This work ‘Balloon Girl’ is a 2002 mural graffiti art, with a girl letting go of a heart-shaped balloon. In 2007, the mural sold for £37,200 at Sotheby’s. What does the graffiti of the girl mean? In my opinion I feel that this shows children in other countries; that are going through war or fighting. This is a lovely piece of work and shows so many different emotions. The balloon its self is a strong symbol because it is heart shaped. Other thing that I think about when I see this is where is the balloon going. Does this actually mean something? I like the way that this image/graffiti puts loads of different ideas into my head.

Studio Session - Sketchbook Work

During the studio session, I decided to work on the Sense of Place project by doing some work in my sketchbook. I decided to work on some logo designing. I have always had a high interest in creating logos. For this, I have decided to design a logo for a pub in my local area that I knew needed a logo. I wanted to create this by using the Cornwall map outline. I started off with some simple type styles to see which one I would like to use for the finished project. I have done a page on this and I am happy with some of the outcomes. I then decided to draw the outline of Cornwall to see if I can include this in the logo. I just did a simple type style over the top of this to see if it worked. I am happy with how that looked. Next, I played around with how the logo will look. I have research logo designs and quite a lot of them have the logo in a circle shape. So I decided to go with this based on that. I then wanted to include a pub idea or restaurant item in the logo to see if it would work. I decided to go with a plate styled outline for the outside of the logo. I think this works and I am pleased with how this looks. Next was to put the outline of Cornwall with the plate theme. I draw out the outline first and then draw the plate outline on top of this. I think this will be my main idea for the final piece as I am happy with how it looks.

For the next part of this I am going to roughly sketch the finished product and then I will take this and create it using InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop and see which one works the best.

Drawing Task 3

(Re)-Writing

Independent Task

Essay Introduction Start

In this essay, I will discuss how subcultures affect influential graphic designers, and state the effect of this on them and their work. I will explore the origin of graffiti as well as looking into hip hops effect on art and how it has changed throughout time. In response to this, I will research graffiti and hip hop and compare this to the work of influential graphic designers.

I had to write a draft of an essay introduction. I started off with this above and I am pleased with what I have said. I would like to change the opener of the essay because I feel that the opener has to be the strongest sentence, to grab the reader’s attention.

The first part of the seminar was to write down some hard facts about a short clip. The clip was from the film Casablanca (1942) which I had never seen before. The facts I wrote dwon from seeing this were:

  • 1935 he ran guns to Ethiopia
  • 1936 he fought in Spain – and got paid well
  • Orders to keep Lazro here

What the dialogue revealed was: Not too fast, not dragging, full of content, developing characters, developing relationships between those characters, creates intrigue to watch more.

Next task was to read between the lines and explain what is implied during this conversation. I wrote down:

  • There is no exit visa for Lazro – the gut saying this didn’t say it like an option he was determined to keep Lazro here.
  • The winning side would of paid you better – when he was saying this he raised his eyebrows, like he was saying that he was on the wrong team.

Task – Editor

The task was to take someone else’s work and write some good points and some improvements for their work. The feedback that I got for my work was:

  • Very concise
  • Usage of fact
  • Read well
  • Very clearly outlines the question

  • Rewrite the first sentence(not to use – In this essay, I will)

So the next task was to rewrite what we had written. I was quite happy with what I had written but I knew that I needed to change the opener. So I decided to come up with:

The discussion of subcultures effect on influential graphics designers will be state by the effect on them and their work.

I am happy with this opener and I will consider using this for when I decide to start writing my essay up as a draft.

This seminar has helped me a lot with opening a sentence and about look at dialogue and seeing what the dialogue means.
